Forticrete's high performance cast stone detailing and its award-winning Gemini roof tiles have been specified by David Wilson Homes Southern for the construction of Houses at The Racecourse which is a development of 1,500 houses and apartments situated in the centre of Newbury, West Berkshire.
The Racecourse Newbury comprises three separate phases, each boasting a combination of one, two, three and four-bedroom houses, apartments and associated infrastructure. Phase one of construction saw the development of 427 new dwellings on the western side of the racecourse. Sitting just a stone's throw from the entrance to the racecourse and adjacent to the Stroud Green conservation area, phase one required David Wilson Homes to specify high quality materials capable of blending sympathetically with the surrounding area.
David Wilson Homes specified Forticrete's innovative twin interlocking plain tile in Mixed Russet and Slate Grey to ensure the properties integrate seamlessly with the site's local vernacular. Forticrete Cast Stone detailing components including parapets, a portico kit, decorative heads and cills in a 'Bath' finish were also specified to provide decorative finishing touches to the homes' entrance, roof edges and windows.
Simon Kirk, Technical Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, commented: "As one of the UK's premier horseracing venues, The Racecourse Newbury provides luxury homes in a truly unique setting. With that in mind, it was essential that for the construction of phase one, we specified materials to deliver a finish befitting of this stunning development and one in-keeping with its surrounding environment.
"Forticrete's Gemini roof tile and cast stone detailing ticked all the boxes - we couldn't be happier with the results."
Replicating the traditions, quality and aesthetic appeal of the natural stones available throughout the UK since the 1960s, Forticrete's standard cast stone products are manufactured from high grade limestone and sandstone aggregates, cements, pigments and waterproofing agents, in accordance with the appropriate British and European standards.
Forticrete's Gemini interlocking tiles have been specifically designed to replicate the look and feel of traditional plain tiles, maintaining the appearance of a traditional plain tile roof. They have 40% less CO˛ emissions per m˛ roof and improved coverage, using less tiles per m˛ making it a much more cost effective solution. The roof tiling solution features increased tile strength and an even stronger, tighter interlock as standard and because they are so simple to install, the cost to lay them is also significantly reduced.
As well as being extremely energy efficient, these next generation roof tiles are aesthetically pleasing and high in quality. They have been specifically designed as interlocking tiles which are just 270mm x 337mm overall, yet because of a carefully judged central groove and innovative ‘double cambered’ design, they have the appearance of two traditional plain tiles side by side when laid, effectively laying two tiles at a time.
